Freelance Doug pointed me to the following video demonstrating just how insane baseball managers can get.
In the video, Mississippi Braves manager Phillip Wellman goes on quite possibly the craziest tirade I have ever seen. It includes covering the entire plate with dirt, then drawing a larger home plate around it, pulling up both 2nd and 3rd base, using the rosin bag as a hand grenade, and finally, blowing kisses to the crowd.
Apparently, some players thought it was “pretty cool”:
“He’s a real passionate guy, so a lot of that was his passion for the game,” said catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who started this season under Wellman in Mississippi. “The other stuff, I don’t know if he made it up or what all that was, but it was pretty cool.”
I’m not sure that “pretty cool” is the best description. “Insane” may be a little more appropriate. Why do we allow managers to go on such tirades?
