Interesting Take On The Amaechi/Hardaway Story

The folks over at Sports Media Watch have an interesting analysis of the John Amaechi Tim Hardaway story.

Can this in any way be described as objective news coverage? ESPN is using a news story to promote a book. And that news story was created by that book, making this entire Amaechi story a terrible exercise in vertical integration. This is along the lines of FOX’s attempt to publish If I Did It by O.J. Simpson and air a two-part interview with the accused murderer as well. FOX created a news story and briefly gained the benefit of massive publicity — until the backlash became too great and News Corp. had to pull both the book and the interview.

That is unlikely in this case, as Amaechi is a far more sympathetic figure that Simpson.

Add this to my reasons to give up on ESPN.
