Many people believe Jerry intended for Bill Parcells to be the bridge to Bill Cowher. Now, a lot of folks are saying that Wade Phillips is the bridge to Jason Garrett. Personally, I don’t think he is as there are three scenarios that could play out:
- Wade Phillips is a success: The Cowboys make the playoffs each of the next 3 seasons, including a Super Bowl win.
- Wade Phillips is mediocre: The Cowboys make the playoffs in one of the next 3 seasons, with a couple of 8-8 or 9-7 seasons.
- Wade Phillips is a failure: The Cowboys don’t make the playoffs in the next 3 years, and Wade is run out of town.
If scenario #1 plays out, then Wade Phillips will most likely stick around for a while, and Jason Garrett will be hired away as assistants from good teams usually are. If scenarios 2 or 3 play out, would Jerry really promote from within? I suppose that is what he did when replacing Chan Gailey with Dave Campo, but hopefully Jerry has learned from that mistake. I suppose #2 could happen in a case where the defense stinks, but the offense is great. However, in that case I think Jerry would look for another defensive guy. Basically, I don’t buy in to the idea that Jason Garrett is being groomed to be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry believes this team is very talented, and very close to a Super Bowl. He is looking for quick improvement, not a long-term plan.
