Mavs Beat Warriors

Did the Dallas Mavericks finally beat the Golden State Warriors 120-115. I know the Warriors are a winless team, but I think it was good for the Mavs to get his monkey off their back after being embarrassed by Golden State in the first round of the playoffs last year.

No matter the circumstances, the Mavs finally moved their biggest mental block a few inches.

“If we lose, maybe it’s a big deal,” said Jerry Stackhouse, who hit a key 3-pointer with 37 seconds left. “If we win, I don’t know if it’s that much of a big deal. With what’s gone on over the past year-and-a-half between these teams, any time we meet it’s going to be a big game.”

I agree with Stackhouse. Nobody wants to be thinking “Here we go again…”. This isn’t a big win, but it would have been a huge loss.

A new era in Kentucky basketball?

Unlikely. It did make this Aggie smile, however, when he saw that Billy Gillispie’s Kentucky Wildcats were beaten 84-68 by the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in the 2k Sports College Hoops Classic.

The tournament, benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, had been set up to send four top programs — No. 3 Memphis, Connecticut, Oklahoma and Kentucky — to New York next week to play in the semifinals.

However, instead of the Wildcats, Gardner-Webb, which finished 9-21 last season and tied for seventh in the Atlantic Sun Conference, will play the winner of Thursday night’s game between Buffalo and Connecticut.

It looks like it was never a competitive contest, as the Wildcats were quickly down 14-0, and were never able to cut the deficit below 7.

I know he’ll turn things around, however the criticism at Kentucky is amazing. After an exhibition game, he was criticized for the suit he wore:

Gillispie, criticized by some fans after the team’s first exhibition game for wearing a gray suit and yellow tie but no Kentucky blue, was more appropriately attired this time. He wore a dark blue shirt, with a silver tie and charcoal suit.

I don’t recall him losing to a team like this in his years at TAMU. He was a king. We were happy going to the sweet 16 (Actually, we were happy when we went to the NIT). I wonder what will happen if he loses another game like this one at Kentucky.

Still Waiting…

coachfran1.jpgIt’s a couple of days later, and still no official word on the future of Coach Fran at Texas A&M. It appears the players know that the end is near, however:

Tight end Martellus Bennett said when he sees something on ESPN .com, he usually takes it as fact.

“We all knew what was ahead anyway,” Bennett said. “I mean anybody could see it.”

When asked to clarify his comments, Bennett said, “It’s a business. It’s just like when you’re at work and all your co-workers come around telling you, ‘Hey man, the boss isn’t happy with you.’ You get your pink slip. You better watch out.

Even Stephen McGee is starting to see the reality:

“Hey, this is something that I can’t control and I don’t know the answers to,” McGee said. “I’m not involved in this matter. I’m just going to be the A&M football player my team needs me to be. I’m not going to worry about it.”

I think we’re all 100% certain that Coach Fran won’t make it past the current season. I know I’m ready to get this behind us and start looking forward.

Did Christmas Come Early For The Aggies?

ESPN’s College Football Live is reporting that Texas A&M Head Football Coach Dennis Franchione has agreed to a buyout. I haven’t seen anything official online, but according to this story on ESPN.com:

Texas A&M is reportedly researching whether Franchione violated his contract with the income he received from the newsletter. If he is found in violation of the contract, the Aggies may not have to pay the coach anything upon firing him.

Franchione’s contract pays him $2 million per season and runs through 2012. A buyout will be $141,667 per month for the remainder of the contract, or about $8 million. Ware reported Monday that Texas A&M is looking for a buyout in the $2 million range.

Rumors are that Coach Fran will resign tomorrow. Tommy Tuberville is rumored to be his successor.

Updates after the jump. (Read the article)
