Dallas Cowboys Release Roy Williams (the bad one)

According to NBC Channel 5 in Dallas, the Dallas Cowboys have cut Safety Roy Williams.

T.O. is not the only member of the Dallas Cowboys that was released Wednesday night. After seven seasons, safety Roy Williams is no longer a member of America’s Team.

The move should be no surprise to Cowboys fans since there has been heavy speculation that Williams would not be back for the 2009 season.

Williams confirmed the team’s decision to Newy Scruggs Thursday morning.

My only question about this is, “What took so long?”.  I assume they were trying to work out a trade, but nobody wanted him.

Dallas Cowboys Release Terrell Owens

According to ESPN.com, the Dallas Cowboys have released Terrell Owens.  I’m not sure if I’m on-board with this or not, but the Cowboys definitely need to do something this off-season to improve the attitude/chemistry of the team.  I guess we’ll find out if Roy Williams can step up and be a #1 wide receiver.

Speaking of Roy Williams, when will they release the Roy Williams the safety?

Cowboys Quick-Hits (Week 5)

The Dallas Cowboys have played 5 games, are 4-1, and that somehow has landed them 3rd place in the NFC East. This is probably the most competitive division the NFL has had in years, and Dallas is going to have to pick things up if they want to win it. Here are my thoughts after Week 5:

  1. The offense doesn’t look sharp.  Mostly, Tony Romo doesn’t look sharp.  He’s had a lot of overthrows, and needs to do a better job protecting the ball.  I know he likes to take risks, and with those risks often come big rewards, but you can’t win big games if you turn the ball over more than your opponent.
  2. Felix Jones needs more touches.  I watched the Redskins game wondering the entire time, “Where is Felix Jones?”.  We saw again what happens when he gets the ball.  He takes a 4th and 4 and turns it into a 33 yard touchdown.  Let Barber soften them up, then Felix can run all over them.
  3. As I said before, T.O. can complain all he wants after a loss, as long as he keeps saying the right things after a win.
  4. Pacman Adam Jones needs to learn how to catch.  Apparently said he’ll be hitting the JUGGS machine this week.  Lets just hope those are the only “jugs” he’ll be hitting.
  5. I enjoy the Jay Ratliff scream after stuffing a play.  That man can play nose tackle.

Now they get Arizona, St. Louis, and Tampa Bay.  I know AZ and TB both have winning records, but the Cowboys should come up with 3 wins in tne next 3 games.

Why can’t we emulate this?

I’ve been getting more and more into football.  And by football I mean the global definition, not our regional one.  American sports have a lot of exciting moments.  There’s the World Series, the Final Four, the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup Playoffs etc.  However, other than championship games or playoff runs, some of the best excitement is during David vs. Goliath encounters like Boise St. over ZeroU a few years back.

We are lacking one other thing that could add the David and Goliath factor and make sports much more exciting in this country – a relegation/promotion system.  I love that about the football leagues.  MANкомпютри I wish we could have that.  No more tanking seasons for draft picks (and the lotteries this causes).  No more MLB payrolls less than what superstars make by themselves.

I realize we don’t have such an amazing minor league structure right now to emulate it 100%.  So maybe we could do this – if your team finishes last place, you’re on “warning”.  Finish last place the next year or maybe the next two?  You’re relegated.  Bye!  Don’t let the door hit you.  And don’t worry, you’ll get a chance for promotion back up, if you care to start putting in some effort.

How nice would it be to get rid of some of the suck-ass teams in professional leagues and replace them with lesser-known squads with owners that actually give a damn and want to win?!  How nice would it be to see the Fort Worth Cats (first team that came to mind) get a shot at the major leagues?  Insert your local minor league team name here.  At the very least, it would generate a lot more interest…

11 Cowboys Pro Bowlers

The Dallas Cowboys are sending 11 players to the Pro Bowl this year, including “backup” running back Marion Barber:

The 11 players are offensive tackle Flozell Adams, running back Marion Barber, guard Leonard Davis, kicker Nick Folk, center Andre Gurode, safety Ken Hamlin, cornerback Terence Newman, wide receiver Terrell Owens, quarterback Tony Romo, linebacker DeMarcus Ware and tight end Jason Witten.

So Marion Barber is now a pro-bowler, but not even a starter on his own team.
